7 tips for living with meat eaters

Going vegan is a very exciting time, and whether you're just starting out, or are a long-term harderned vegan you may have already learned that it's probably the best decision you've ever made, but that doesn't come without its problems. Being vegan in a house full of meat-eaters can be difficult at times, but here's some tips on how to help yourself stay positive and happy regardless of your environment!

1.) Encourage 'Meat-Free Monday'

Meat-free monday was a campaign launched back in 2009 by Paul, Mary and Stella McCartney in order to encourage people to eat less meat and think more about the impact their choices may have. While it's just a start, by enroucaging meat-free mondays in your house, you have a chance to cook and create delicious vegan meals for your family or housemates to enjoy.

2.) Vegan Cookbooks

I know it can be tempting to just have another bowl of pasta or an avocado, but take some time to make your meals enjoyable. Try to cook proper meals wherever you can (especially if you're doing meat-free mondays). Purchase a couple of cookbooks or even jsut use recipes off the internet, we'll make a chef of you yet!

3.) Ignore Any Negativity

I know it can be difficult to ignore it when people are blatently mocking something you feel passionate about, but it's not worth rising to the challenge. Instead, wait until they show any genuine curiosity and take the chance to educate other members of the house as to why you've made the choice to become vegan.

4.) 'Accidentally' Vegan Foods

Supermarkets are getting better at stocking new ranges of vegan foods, but for many years they've been doing it without even knowing. Some foods are accidentally vegan. Their lack of animal product may not be purposeful, but it does mean you can enjoy some of the same snacks and treats as other members of the house, check out our list of accidentally vegan foods.

5.) Look at Restaurants Ahead of Time

Always try to choose restaurants that cater for both vegans and omnivores, looking up local restraurants before a dinner event will help you put the idea forward. While having chips and alcohol as the only two vegan options on a menu can be fun for a while, its gets old very quickly.

6.) Decide Which Foods Go Where

This only really applies to the fridge, where foods can easily become contaminated with one another if incorrectly stored. Choose a shelf for vegan foods and insist that everybody respects that. If fridge space is limited, there is no reason that communal household vegan foods such as veg can't be stored there too.

7.) Join a Facebook Group

Sometimes you might get the horrible opinions on veganism from family and friends, and it's key that you dont let yourself feel alienated and alone. Joining a facebook group such as 'New Vegan Support' is a great way to connect with likeminded people, have a rant and remind yourself that you are one of millions in the same situation.
